We are hoping to view a movie with a similar theme following the novel for those students who are more visual.

CHC2P: This class is looking at the Second World War, we had a Remembrance week filled with Poppy lessons, guest speakers and "Saving Private Ryan" and now we are back to the effects of WWII on Canada and Canadians. We will look at how Hitler was able to convince much of Europe to follow his ways, how Canada stepped up to fight and how we were affected at home.

ENG2P: This class is continuing to read "Stones". The class is answering questions for each of the chapters and are getting supplemental material as well about the novel, Orillia (the setting of the story) and different beliefs of the world. At the half-way point the students are writing a response journal to the novel. They will demonstrate their ability to express an opinion of a work they are reading, make references between their life and the novel and follow English conventions. The novel is nearing it's emotional climax and we will be discussing how events and people can shape who we are as people.

CHC2P: This class is going to experience "Remembrance Week". Monday we will have a lesson on the origins of the Poppy and it's use for commemorating our veterans. Tuesday the history classes will enjoy a guest speaker to the school who will share with us, letters family recieved from her father when he fought in the First World War. Wednesday, the class will look at the Veterans Paper and answer some questions on the different articles about Canadians and their service in International fights. Thursday, the class will view a movie about the war - one of the more realistic ones that are out there. Saving Private Ryan. Finally, on Friday, the school will be attending our Remembrance Day service. We are back to the Second World War next week.

ENG2P: This class is going to start their second class novel, another novel by William Bell entitled "Stones". The class will be keeping track of the novel in two different ways - Firstly with a chart that records Plot, character, setting and Literary Devices and Secondly, by answering questions on the plot. The novel is about a high school boy and his relationships with his parents, a new girl and his community and his hunt for the truth behind a mystery. The novel is suspenseful and the class will examine how an author is able to raise a readers suspense when writing.

Week of October 31st - November 4th

ENG1P: This class is continuing to read about Franklin Crabbe. We have looked at the theme of "being an outsider" and of "dysfunction" both within a family and with a person. The character is reaching a severe crisis and we will take some time to examine how Crabbe will respond. The class will be writing a response journal to the novel at the midpoint. We continue to answer questions and complete a chart to keep the novel organized and easy to study for the test.

CHC2P: This class is starting the beginnings of WWII this week. We will re-cap the Treaty of Versailles from the First World War and look at how it led to angry feelings within Germany and the need for a leader like Hitler to emerge in order to bring Germany out of economic failure. We will also examine some of the other European leaders and the dictators at the time. Of course the impact of Canada will be foremost in the unit. How we Canadians responded, how the government responded and our participation in the Second World War.

ENG2P: This class completed a test last week for "Speak to the Earth". We will finish the novel off with a quick re-cap/question period and hand back and correct the test. We are then moving on to the next novel in the course. The themes will be related and the class will be able to keep track of the novel fairly easily with questions and a novel chart. This will help for the next novel test to keep them organized and help the class prepare and study in a more efficient manner.

Week of October 24th - 28th

ENG1P: This class is following the character of Franklin Crabbe and his misadventures. The novel is called "Crabbe" and the class is keeping track of some familiar terms; setting, plot, character and other literary devices, as well as answering some questions on the events of the novel. This week the class will have a look at some of the themes in the novel and how they are being revealed by the author to the reader. We continue to look at/read the novel this week as well as related subjects.

CHC2P: The 20's and 30's are coming to a close. The class will be demonstrating their knowledge of why we don't stock pile our goods or rely on one country for our imports/exports. The class can also explain why we don't purchase items 'on margin' any longer. A review of technologies, people, events and occurences from those two decades will happen this week followed by some time to complete their time capsule and a small quiz before preparing the class for what was happening in Europe at the end of the 1930's (Germany).

ENG2P: This class is finishing "Speak to the Earth". Environmental issues are in the media constantly these days but this wasn't the case in 1993 and Clayoquot Sound was relatively new to the media for this type of protest. The students will look at how well or poorly the novel mirrored the actual events of 1993. The class will review the questions they have answered, preparing them for submission and making sure all vocabulary words have been completed as well. The class will be having a test on "Speak to the Earth" at the end of the week - they will decide on the better day (Thurs/Fri).

Week of October 17th - 21st

ENG1P: This class has finished all parts of a Narrative by exploring short stories, myths, fairy tales and poetry. The class will finally be able to look at a long narrative (novel) and will begin with "Crabbe" an adventure novel with a teen boy as the central character. The class will put their knowledge of narrative to use in this longer version and will also be able to explore character, setting and plot development very thoroughly. In addition we will look at the content, geography and author of the novel. The class will be writing response journals as they read and exploring the teenage phenomenon and the different stereotypes that come with being a teen.

CHC2P: The class will continue to explore the 1920's and 1930's by looking at over-view video's and further exploring the economy and government and how these two came together during the depression. The class will see how the Roaring 20's got it's name and the new technology and leisure activities that began during the decade followed by the things that were then missed during the depression and the toll that took on the people and the nation.

ENG2P: This class will continue to read "Speak to the Earth" while answering questions and expanding their vocabulary. We will also be watching a series of video's related to Clayoquot Sound. The class will learn a little about the environment (cross curricular), the impact of protesting and how people can make a difference. The class is learning the definition of their created poetry and understanding how to create each one. This will continue into next week and when the class has completed betweeen 8- 10 poems they will bind the best 6 and submit their anthology for grading.

CHC2P: This class finished aspects of the first World War with a viewing of the Halifax Harbour Explosion and are moving on to the 1920's and 1930's. Or the Roaring 20's and Dirty 30's as some like to refer to them. This will take a few weeks to get through and while the class works away on these two decades they will also be completing a Time Capsule for the unit summative.

ENG2P: This class is ready to begin their first class novel. We start "Speak to the Earth" by William Bell. There are accompanying questions and vocabulary to learn as well as historical data (this was a real event that was fictionalized), movie's from the time, news coverage and articles on what was happening. The novel itself will be tracked according to the structure of character and plot development and the setting and mood changes.

Week of September 26th

ENG1P: This class is learning that the parts of a Narrative structure can be seen in many forms; short stories, myths, movies and poetry. We are reading 5 selections from the textbook in an effort to develop an understanding of Elements of a Narrative, Parts of a Narrative and Literary Terms. The class will also move towards the creation of their own narrative and will begin that process this week with a due date of completion at the end of the month (September 30th). We are off to a good start and after reviewing the parts of speech, confused words and punctuation we are right into the curriculum.

CHC2P: After reviewing some significant events prior to the 1900's in Canada to understand what is to come and to make sure the entire class has the same learning we are into the War this week, WWI to be exact. Between the textbook, some handouts and notes we are learning what extrodinary efforts were made by Canadians in Europe and at home during the war. The class took a Heritage Quiz to see how 'Canadian' smart they were and the class did pretty well, even knowing 1867 was our Confederation and that Newfoundland was the last province to join Canada - with a class as smart as this group, expect great things.

ENG2P: This class is developing an understanding of the Power of words. How words can hurt, heal, sway, and humour people. We are going to put words to the test over the next couple weeks. The class is preparing for a speech, 2 minutes of length, with a list of words at their calling. The class was given a list of 20 words, they will choose 5 in which to incorporate into their speech. We are developing a speech with Attention Getters, Examples, The Point and So What?? . The speech will be graded both orally and written as a 60/40 split and the date for Speeches will begin on the 27th of September.

Enjoy September and all the events that the school offers. We will be applying these expectations to the new unit, Unit #3 Informational Forms and Voices. As a class we are starting 'Cue for Treason' a novel that takes place during the time of William Shakespeare's early days as a young playwright. It follows the adventures of a young boy from the historic Cumberland county as he flees from a corrupt upper class land owner out for revenge. In addition to the questions with the novel, the class will learn Historic English terms and land formations that they might not be familiar with as it leads into the last unit; Dramatic Forms and Voices, Romeo and Juliet. Terms such as Crags, Dells, Moor and where Blencathra is geographically. The story is fast paced and should be able to hold the student's interest.

ENG1P: This class will review the novel 'The Pigman' and have a quiz on the characters, the issues facing the characters and events from the novel itself. The quiz will be at the end of the first week (18th or 19th).We are continueing to follow the story "Adventures in Shroomville" from the Hamilton Spectator and are at the half-way point in the chapters. Their understanding of the terms used in the story is coming along well. Every other day they define another group of words and the learning is applied later in fill in the blank sentences. The story is reaching an exciting moment for the main character and the class will be able to tie together the two stories; The Pigman and Adventures in Shroomville thematically.
The class has another eight chapters to go with the newspaper story and in addition to the story, they will learn how to write an article for a newspaper, learning about the inverted pyramid style of reporting.

HFN2O: This class is reviewing their previous unit of study, Nutrients, Canada's Food Guide, Diet and Disease, Super Size Me and Food Labels. The class will then view and answer questions on a movie about nutrition to reinforce their learning. The next unit we will look at is Food Addititives, the positive and negative affects that this has on food, the nutritional value of the food and on humans that consume that food - specifically allergies to addititives. We will review yo-yo dieting and the importance of eating properly, small meals throughout the day and all the food groups.

November 2nd - 5th and 8th - 12th

ENG1P: This class is moving forward in two different stories. The first is the Hamilton Spectator story "Adventures in Shroomville", we are currently on chapter 4. The story comes out every Monday and Wednesday in the Go Section if you are interested in following along. The class defines words associated with the historical nature of the tale, they read independently and keep track of plot and setting as well as answering questions or completing a response journal.
The other narrative we are completing is, The Pigman. We read two chapters a day, again keeping track of important new or changes to existing character, setting and plot. The story is about two teenagers who are writing a Memoir about someone they once new and cared for. This is a little more relevant to them and we are able to look at how plot is developed in a novel vs. short story. They are also keeping notes on major issues from the novel. We spend every other day on these items and will be busy the month of November.

HFN20: The class was working on a slide show for a particular disease affected by diet. We will be viewing those slide shows this week, answering questions that the groups created for us and sampling foods that each group prepares at the end of the week that will help or correct these diseases. As well this week we will have a look at a movie highlighting why we need to watch what we eat. Next week, just before turn around day we are going to look at why Breakfast is such an important meal and if we have time, make a nutritional breakfast for the class. After breakfast we will review the importance of reading labels, other diseases that occur without proper nutritional eating and prepare for a midterm test.

ENG1D: This class is reading Of Mice and Men. We are nearing the end of the novel and will be looking at the themes more closely at the end of chapter #5. Chapter #6 will finish the novel as well as the terminology, questions and literary terms from each chapter - these will be reviewed prior to the test. We will also review the themes of the novel and view the movie as a class. As a summative assignment the class will attempt a creative piece utilizing the themes covered and write a Chapter #7 for the novel that would not leave the reader 'hanging'. All of this work will be completed with a test on the novel; covering Terms, Questions, Literary Devices and Themes.

October 25th - 29th

ENG1P: This class is following the "Adventures in Shroomville"; the story published every Monday and Wednesday in the Hamilton Spectator. The class will be reading independantly, answering questions from the story, expanding their vocabulary and making predictions. This is all practice for next years literacy test in grade 10. As a whole, the class is reading The Pigman. We will alternate days as to which story/novel we are doing and the students will be responsible for staying organized and completing the tasks for each narrative seperate.

HFN2O:This class created a food product of their own last week, and listed all the nutritional requirements, daily intake and ingredients of this product in a work of art. This week the class will be looking at Dietary diseases. They will spend some time in the computer lab this week researching said project and putting it together in a slide show presentation and creating questions for their classmates to answer after witnessing their slide show. At the culmination of this research, each group will prepare a meal for that disease.

ENG1D: This class is looking at John Stienbeck's "Of Mice and Men". We are looking at the themes of the American Dream, Underdog's and answering questions on the novels chapters and expanding our vocabulary as well. The class has learned that literary terms such as simile and symbol appear not only in narratives but in poems as well. Each student was responsible for creating 12 different poems that we worked on in class over the last couple weeks. They are to take their best 8 poems and TYPE them up on a piece of paper, title the poem, and print it off, placing it within an anthology with their own original artwork as a title page. This Poetry Anthology is due on the 22nd. At the same time as the class has been writing poems, we have been reading some aloud and listening to various entertaining slam poetry. This oral component of their grade will be performing their own created slam, staring on Thursday. After poetry we are entering the next unit and will be beginning a novel as a class and following the "Adventures in Shroomville" story that appears in the Hamilton Spectator - if you would like to follow along at home, I invite you to do so.

HFN2O: This class has been looking at nutrition, specific nutrients and the Canada Food Guide. Students created a poster about their specific nutrient and the role it plays in the human body. As well as learning about daily servings that individuals should be having. The class cooked Healthy Taco's in class last week and will be baking Chocolate Oat Chippers this week in class.

ENG1D: This class has been working on poetry as well as the other english class. The students will choose their best 10 out of 12 poems they have created to publish in their own Poetry Anthology. They have written two quatrains, Haiku, Tanka, Concrete, Limerick, Sonnet, Lyric, Blank Verse, Narrative, Free Verse and a Nursery Rhyme. The class will also be presenting a one minute slam poem starting on Thursday as the oral component of the unit.

September 27th - October 1st

ENG1P: This class is working on their independant short stories. Throughout the month we have looked at characterization, establishing a setting, selecting a point of view, developing a plot and adding dialogue. The class will take all that information and work it into a short story with marks for process on the way. The first will be development, the rough copy (with peer editing) and finally the good copy due in early Oct. The class will also be deciding on when they would like their first Unit Quiz next week.

HFN2O: This week the class is making loaves/bread. We are still in the quick bread section of our lessons but we are moving from safety in the kitchen and ingredients to the nutritional aspects of food and the role they play in our lives and our health and development. Cooking will be Wednesday of this week as the loaves take an hour or more to bake.

ENG1D: This class is also working on their independant story but are expected to select a genre for their story and make sure literary techniques are used within their creation.
See ENG1P for more details.

September 20 - 24th

ENG1P: This class has worked on two short stories so far. The class is able to identify the introduction, rising action, conflicts, climax, falling action and conclusion of a story. They can also tell me about the setting and the character(s) with detail. Next week we will look at how to make our own stories; that will mean a follow up on use of adjectives in a story, describing a person/location and some group work on a story summary. We continue to have a busy September in English.
ENG1D: This class will also being doing group work, but will have to identify the type and genre of a story of the group's creation, as well as the work mentioned above.

HFN2O: This class has prepared themselves for their first food lab on Friday Sept, 17th. Six groups of four will make four different types of muffins in this lab. This will required them to take the safety instructions, recipe reading and measuring learning and apply it to their creations. Next week we will come out of the kitchen to the library to look at cook books; their function and usefulness to a newcomer to the cooking scene. Then we jumped right into the first unit; Narrative Voices.
Both classes start off very similar with the work load and expectations differing.
Next week we will continue to look at specific aspects of a Narrative (Setting, Characters, Point of View, Theme, Atmosphere and Conflicts). This all leads into the creation of each student's personal Narrative. They will have some practice telling stories in class by viewing images and identify story type, genre and mood and then move to creating a character or a setting by using our reviewed adjectives.
There will be lots of creativity and imagination needed for this first unit.
Enjoy being back to school.

HFN2O
The first week of class went very well. We have gotten to know the various utensils that are used in the kitchen as well as safety issues for the Food Labs. A list of general policies will be coming home to be signed as well, there are still a few students who have to pay their $20 course fee. We ended the week with some taste testing and guessing at products and prices but even the nervous students seemed to have liked at least one new food.
Next week we will review safety procedures with a couple handouts and get ready for a food lab on Friday. The class will be working on a small research project for a couple days and viewing media during these harsh times.

Week of Sept. 28th - Oct. 2nd

End of the first month - time does fly!

ENG4C: This class completed their first report and first Journal last week.
