October 25th - 29th

ENG1P: This class is following the "Adventures in Shroomville"; the story published every Monday and Wednesday in the Hamilton Spectator. The class will be reading independantly, answering questions from the story, expanding their vocabulary and making predictions. This is all practice for next years literacy test in grade 10. As a whole, the class is reading The Pigman. We will alternate days as to which story/novel we are doing and the students will be responsible for staying organized and completing the tasks for each narrative seperate.

HFN2O:This class created a food product of their own last week, and listed all the nutritional requirements, daily intake and ingredients of this product in a work of art. This week the class will be looking at Dietary diseases. They will spend some time in the computer lab this week researching said project and putting it together in a slide show presentation and creating questions for their classmates to answer after witnessing their slide show. At the culmination of this research, each group will prepare a meal for that disease.

ENG1D: This class is looking at John Stienbeck's "Of Mice and Men". We are looking at the themes of the American Dream, Underdog's and answering questions on the novels chapters and expanding our vocabulary as well. This small novel is a perfect way to make the transition from short stories and poetry to the lengthy-ness of a novel.

October 18th - 22nd

ENG1P: This class has been working on Poetry. The class has learned that literary terms such as simile and symbol appear not only in narratives but in poems as well. Each student was responsible for creating 12 different poems that we worked on in class over the last couple weeks. They are to take their best 8 poems and TYPE them up on a piece of paper, title the poem, and print it off, placing it within an anthology with their own original artwork as a title page. This Poetry Anthology is due on the 22nd. At the same time as the class has been writing poems, we have been reading some aloud and listening to various entertaining slam poetry. This oral component of their grade will be performing their own created slam, staring on Thursday. After poetry we are entering the next unit and will be beginning a novel as a class and following the "Adventures in Shroomville" story that appears in the Hamilton Spectator - if you would like to follow along at home, I invite you to do so.

HFN2O: This class has been looking at nutrition, specific nutrients and the Canada Food Guide. Students created a poster about their specific nutrient and the role it plays in the human body. As well as learning about daily servings that individuals should be having. The class cooked Healthy Taco's in class last week and will be baking Chocolate Oat Chippers this week in class.

ENG1D: This class has been working on poetry as well as the other english class. The students will choose their best 10 out of 12 poems they have created to publish in their own Poetry Anthology. They have written two quatrains, Haiku, Tanka, Concrete, Limerick, Sonnet, Lyric, Blank Verse, Narrative, Free Verse and a Nursery Rhyme. The class will also be presenting a one minute slam poem starting on Thursday as the oral component of the unit.
