Week of December 14th - 18th

Wishing everyone a Safe and Happy Holiday and All the Best for New Year's 2010!!!

ENG4C: This class is finishing a movie comparison of race relations as it connects to To Kill A Mockingbird. The class is responsible for a two page journal that demonstrates connections between the three media and the issues that continue today.

ENG2D: This class is finishing Catcher In The Rye. They are handing in a journal on the 15th and taking up the questions they have been working on beginning on the 17th and concluding on the 18th (if any).

CHC2P: This class is beginning to look at their summative research project and are being given time to look that over. As well the class is finishing our look at the 1950's Post War Era and how the wars and the return of soldiers influenced the geography and economy of Canada.

Week of December 7th - 11th

Turn Around Day is Thursday!!

ENG4C: This class has started and will continue to present their seminar's on To Kill A Mockingbird. When the novel has been presented we will have a test on the novel and seminar's as well as the accompanying handouts throughout this novel. Following the seminars will be the two remaining movies and the movie comparison journal.

ENG2D: This class is nearly finished their partnership with Catcher In The Rye. Answering the all the questions with point form and their assigned questions in detail as well as the journal - next Tuesday is the last day for this package. Everything gets presented on Wednesday and Thursday next week. Journals come in on Tuesday.

CHC2P: This class is moving on from WWII and is learning about the impact from that event and how it affected their lives; from the Cold War, to the Baby Boom, the new technology to suburbs. We will cover this topic until the end of the semester as well as having time to work on their summative project.

Week of November 30th - December 4th

There are only three weeks before the Christmas Holidays so make sure you follow your timelines.

ENG4C: This class is beginning to present their seminars on To Kill A Mockingbird. The class can ask questions, answer questions and participate in these seminars. I will fill in any other important information from the chapters. All this information and the chapter's will be on the test at the end of the novel.

ENG2D: This class is continuing to work with their partner on Catcher In The Rye on the questions that they were assigned and the journal topic at the end of the question booklet. I continue to hand out sheets, answer questions and help with the interpretation of the novel.

CHC2P: This class is preparing for a WWII test on the Tuesday and viewing one other video on the attrocities that occured at various Concentration Camps in Germany. The class will finish the week with a look at how both wars have affected the global view of war as well as Canada's role in current war-ing countries.

Week of November 23rd - 27th

It is the last week of November already - time flies when you are having fun.

ENG4C: This class has been given their seminar procedures and have chosen their own partner to work with. We continue to cover relevant issues to To Kill A Mockingbird, such as racism, addiction, Klu Klux Klan, and the Depression. As a class we will read the novel together and discuss what is occuring in order to prepare the class for their seminar dates.

ENG2D: This class finished the futuristic Fahrenheit 451 and have moved on to something a little more realistic with Catcher In The Rye. The recieved pre-novel handouts to help them know what to expect, we compared novels covered so far in the semester and the students were assigned a partner to work with on a question package and thematic work. We will be working on this novel until Christmas time. Don't forget to read your independant novel, bring it to class for silent reading.

CHC2P: This class observed media on what happened in Poland during World War II involving Polish Jews. As a class we will look at the holocaust and the atrocities that were discovered upon the allies victory. We will look at the end of the War in Europe and the continued role Canadians played in the War with Japan and that eventual end.

Week of November 16th - 20th

ENG4C: This class is handing in work on In Our Time and is moving seamlessly on to To Kill a Mockingbird - with a look at racism and the issues of the era.

ENG2D: This class is finishing Fahrenheit 451 - the package is due on Nov. 20th. We will be having a look at the movie and make some comparisons. On Friday we will have a discussion on the various societies covered in the class so far and move our way to Catcher In The Rye.

CHC2P: This class, having finished viewing "Saving Private Ryan", they will complete a Film Report and we will continue to look at WWII and Canada's role.

Report Cards will be out on Friday November 20th!!!

Week of November 9th -13th

Turn Around Day Tuesday!

ENG4C: This class is working on In Our Time still. The class has answered questions on the novel, taken notes and will, this week, be viewing a movie based on the life of Earnest Hemmingway and writing a movie review. We will finish up In Our Time next week with a Journal assignment on one part of his life; either his life as a youth trying to adapt with family issues, his life in the war and the horrors witnessed or his life returning from the war and trying to fit back into society. This Journal is due next Tuesday.

ENG2D: This class continues to work on Fahrenheit 451 - the class is finishing off the third section of the novel. The concepts are getting harder to understand and more class questions and answers are happening - encourage your child to bring to class ALL their questions because someone else might have the same one.

CHC2P: This class is declaring WAR - WWII that is. We will look at how the Treaty of Versailles led to the second world war, Canada's role in the war and how the war literally included most of the globe.

Week of Nov. 2nd - 6th

ENG4C: This class is working on the novel "In Our Time". The class has question sheets on the first few stories in the novel and we will be taking notes on the themes of the novel as a whole in an effort to understand the ending of the book.

ENG2D: This class should have finished the first section of the novel "Fahrenheit 451" and be working on 'The Sieve and the Sand' this week always keeping in mind that the due date for the package is November 20th. We are discussing questions and answers in class in an effort to help the understanding of a Science Fiction novel and what comment is being made on society.

CHC2P: This class is going to finish the 1920's and 30's this week with a look at the Business cycle and an understanding of what lead up to the Stock Market crash of 1929. They will be doing a 'scrapbook scavenger hunt', getting information from a secondary source. By the end of the week the class will review the 20's and 30's and prepare for the unit test on Friday Nov. 6th.

Week of October 26th - 30th

ENG4c: This class is finishing their assignment on Animal Farm, presenting and handing in a cue card. They will be doing their last project from the textbook - an advertisement for an imaginary product and then we are going to look at "In Our Time" - Hemmingway for the remainder of this week and next.

ENG2D: This class made some corrections to their Lord of the Flies test, handed in an assignment for the novel and got some prepatory handouts for the next novel "Fahrenheit 451". We talked about McCarthyism and issues of conspiracy during the 1950's. While Lord of the Flies involved working in teacher assigned groups, "... 451" will be worked on individually, the class has been given a package of questions, images and short answer work to complete on their own time with a due date of November 20th for final completion. As usual we continue to have silent reading on their personal novels at the start of class.

CHC2P: This class is looking at the 1920's and 1930's. We viewed the movie "Seabiscuit" and they had questions to answer for this time period video. We will look at the role of women in society, the growth of cities and suburbs, the expansion of business and the boom of the economy until finally with nothing to sustain the boom; the crash of 1929. We will be looking at this time period for the next couple weeks.

Week of Oct 19th - 23rd

My apologies for the space between weeks.

ENG4C: This class finished a 500 word technology journal and is working on studying for a test on media and technology articles from the textbook for this week. As well the class is working on a small presentation on Animal Farm/Russian Revolution.

ENG2D: This class finished their Lord of the Flies Seminars, watched the movie and will be writing the test on Tuesday. As well, the class has a creative writing assignment that requires them to write the last chapter of the novel. In addition any student that expressed interest in entering the River Arts Festival writing contest - those entries are due on Friday Oct, 23rd.

CHC2P: This class finished WWI and wrote their unit test. A few student's demonstrated an improvement on the upkeep of their notebook and this translated into much better test scores. The class now looks at what happened after the war during the 20's and 30's in Canada. The class will be working on a small research project for a couple days and viewing media during these harsh times.

Week of Sept. 28th - Oct. 2nd

End of the first month - time does fly!

ENG4C: This class completed their first report and first Journal last week. This week we will be looking at using some media in the class and examining photo essays and what can be expressed in this form. We will be reviewing some on-line and in magazines and then the class will be doing their own photo essay and presenting them to the class at the end of the week or the beginning of next week.

ENG2D: This class finished their speeches - well done! This week the students will be directing the learning. After two example chapter seminar's are presented to them via the teacher (me), the class will model one of those or try their hand at teaching a different way. Chapter's 3 - 12 of Lord of the Flies has been assigned to small groups of students and it will be their responsibility to teach the class 6-8 very important topics from their chapter. At the end of the seminar's, the Unit test will include information learned from each of the seminars as well as themes discussed by the whole class and the topics covered previous to the novel.

CHC2P: This class is entering WWI. The class has looked at how it all started; "the Spark" and will now move on to some specific battles, military moves and the impact to Canada and Canadians. The class will also examine technological advancements during the war, Canadians that emerged as hero's and finally the class will look at media that portray's war as accurately as possible.

Week of September 21st - 25th

Another week into September!

ENG4C: This class is working on a Literacy Report. The class is gathering data about a province, state or country and profiling it's literacy issues, improvements, declines and perhaps making comparisons. We will also be looking at a couple more articles in the textbook later in the week.

ENG2D: This class begins the week with speeches!!! Nerves aside, they have worked hard on these and should be proud of themselves getting the hard stuff over with. We will move onto the Lord of the Flies and how to present a seminar. They will look at literacy terms used by author's to achieve effects in a novel. We will as a class look at the first chapter together and then, working in partner's begin to breakdown the other chapter's in the novel.

CHC2P: This class will have their first unit test on Tuesday - it will cover all the information we covered on Canada at the Turn of the Century. The class has notes taken from within the class and their textbook from which to study. After the test, the class will look at the transition into a Nation under the pressure of a World War and thus will begin our look at Canada's role in WWI.

Week of Sept. 14th - 18th

The Second Week!!

The first week went well, there was no homework over the first weekend of the school year!

ENG4C: This class will continue to work on writing three letters of three different styles; formal, semi-formal and casual. This week we will determine which of those letters will be selected for grading. We will also continue to read articles in the textbook, answering questions and completing some oral reading.

ENG2D: This class will be working on two parts to a speech; a written part and an oral part. We will study how best to create a written speech and how to offer the best ideas for editing our peer's work. As well, the class will attempt to get comfortable with their chosen speech topic and prepare to present it to the class next week in 3-5 minutes. At the same time the class will continue to review punctuation and some grammar in an effort to refine their writing.

CHC2P: This class will be looking at the Turn of the Century questions we have been working on last week and addressing any thoughts or concerns the student's have about the subjects covered. The class will begin looking at comparing decades, items, services or products historically and in present day. This will lead the class to look at little closer to the things affecting their lives today and how that might have come about.

Welcome Back !!!!

Hope everyone had a good summer!!!! Welcome back to the new school year.

This first week will be a short review of topics everyone should know to get started.
After the review is over we are jumping right into the curriculum!

ENG2D: We will start with "The Power of Words". We will look at speaking and reading and
will begin with speeches and an explanation of your culminating Book Festival. We will review grammar and parts of speech and a list of new vocabulary words will be introduced to you.

ENG4C: We will begin the semester with a look at articles from your new textbook! These articles will cover topics such as Media and Technology.

CHC2D: We are going to start the semester with a review of the Turn of the Century, making sure that everyone is able to identify important people, facts and events that happened in Canada prior to WWI. A small project will get everyone ready for knowing how to research historical facts/people, what questions to ask about our country, and how to sift through truth vs. fiction on websites and other sources.

As I said Welcome Back - shake off the summer sleepiness and lets get LEARNING!!!!!
