Semester Begins!!!!

Welcome Back to everyone!!!
This year promises to be another exciting year with much happening within the school, we hope you get involved where you can and want.

ENG1P: This class is going to begin with reviewing some concepts such as parts of speech, the importance of punctuation, grammar and confused words.  We will make our way towards the narrative - why we tell stories, what are their meanings and what elements can be found in a narrative.  We are going to wake up our summer brains and jump right in.

CHC2P: This class is going to recap Canada from the late 1800's to the early 1900's in the first week.  It has been at least two years since taking a history course and a quick review is needed before setting up the origins of WWI.  There will be some handouts and work sheets for the review before getting into the new textbook and jumping right into the causes of the war.

ENG2P: This class is going to begin with reviewing common errors in writing such as knowing the difference between to, too and two; their, there and they're; which, witch and many more confused words.  We will also discuss the Final Summative and students will be given the responsibility of three independent novels to have for their project at the end of the semester.  We will also begin by examining powerful words, when and how to use them and writing with them as well.

June 2012

We have come to the end of a great semester!!

HSP3M: This class has been given a set of review questions for the final examination, they are answering these questions during free time in class.  In the meantime, we will be addressing the anthropological look at violence in our society and how it impacts us.  We will examine the sociological effect of the Bystander by examining the Kitty Genovese story and we will look at the hockey violence issue.  The class will be given some time June 13, 14,and 15 to work on typing their summative work in the library.  Exam review for the course will be June 18 - 20 with the summative due to come in those days as well.  The exam for this class is June 21st at 9:00am.  Best of luck to all.

ENG2D: This class has started the novel "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas".  We are looking at the themes of innocence, friendship, obedience, humanity, prejudice and indifference.  These themes will also tie into the previously read novels from the class.  This novel is fairly short and the class should be able to get through it quickly.  Leaving the 11th for finishing, the 12th for library work on their summative project and the 13, 14,and 15 for presenting their summatives.  Review for the exam will occur on the 18 - 20 and the examinations begin on the 21st.  Best of luck to everyone.

ENG1P: This class is finished the play Romeo and Juliet and has viewed the modernized movie version of the play, they will then view a movie version of West Side Story and complete a movie comparison, this will be a look at technology and it's role in our society.  (Sometimes students don't feel they need to read a book if it exists as a movie).   We will finish off the semester with further work on non-fiction material, begin research on our summative of the 1600's (Romeo and Juliet time period), and complete an exam review before exams begin on the 21st of June.  A great number of students have caught up on missed work - congratulations to them and keep up the hard work for the month of June.  Best of luck to everyone on their examinations.

May 2012

HSP3M: This class is working on an Anthropological view at different structures in our life.  Workplace, Education and others are on the list.  This will lead us to the Culminating Activity for the Unit and for the course - the class has previously done a questionnaire for the Sociology section and a research essay for the psychology section and will now incorporate some participant observation into the remaining summative.  There will be a movie to watch on the different things covered in the text and some notes for the class to take.  We end the semester with a look at why our society has groups and organizations.

ENG2D: This class is working on Poetry and Catcher in the Rye.  The class will be completing two more poems, reviewing the terminology involved in poetry (although there is a lot of overlap into other aspects of English) and finally they will write a small quiz on poetry and submit a small anthology.  The class will work on questions for the novel, there will be student seminars on the various themes of the novel and then we are moving towards a cross curricular topic novel "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas" - this novel will also cover some of the history that is taught in grade 10.  The novel is a smaller length and the class should have no problems getting through the themes and the content as well - ending the semester with dramatic forms and voices and Merchant of Venice.

ENG1P: This class is finishing "The Outsiders" and their facebook pages on their character.  In addition they were writing some creative peices and using their imagination.  Getting into character helped the class understand the different themes of the novel and be able to compare them to the novel previously studied (Crabbe).  The class is moving towards longer writing assignments - with practice essay writing for an audience and purpose in addition to starting the last class novel (Romeo and Juliet).

April 2012

HSP: This class finished their questionnaires, althought some groups were a little slower to get their report typed an submitted, they will all be returned to the groups by the 13th. The class has now turned their attention to the textbook and the sections having to do with personality, what shapes it, were we born with it, what things can go wrong (ie. psychosis, phobias), what role does society have in our personality and how far back have humans behaved this way. April saw the Journal Portfolio submitted again - the marks will be corrected and handed out by the 17th so that each student knows what their mark is. This section, about personality, is interesting and should be fun.

ENG2D: This class is looking at poetry in addition to starting their second class novel and hopefully their second independent novel as well. The class will learn the terms associated with poetry and will begin with lyrics from their favourite song as a help. We will add more terms as we move along with poetry and the emotions behind poems. At the same time the class will start reading the classic novel "Catcher In The Rye". We will follow Holden's decline mentally as he is kicked out of yet another school, is rejected by several woman and loses the only one he really cared for other than his sister. The class will answer questions from the novel, tie in the poetry they are working on, and write a quiz at the end of the novel.

ENG1P: This class is working on non-fiction works from their textbook and will also begin their next novel, a S.E. Hinton that is popular with students. We will continue to work on improving their newspaper article writing and paragraph writing as well. In addition the students are encouraged to add adjectives and adverbs to their work for detail. The class will incorporate modern day technology (on paper) into their novel by creating 'facebook' pages for their characters (each student will be assigned a different character). This will help the students pay attention, read for details, and get to know their character and how they relate to the other characters in the novel.

Week of March 26th -30th

HSP3M: This class is completing their questionnaires. Different groups have either surveyed our secondary school population or sampled from Dunnville as a town. This week they are tabulated and calculating their results. The class is in the library Tuesday, Wednesday and perhaps time on Friday - since Thursday is the literacy test, classes will not run on that day.

ENG2D: This class is finishing Lord of the Flies with a test on Tuesday. They will have literacy test review this week to prepare them for the test. As well we will view the movie Lord of the Flies as a comparison to the novel. Next the class will be looking at some poetry and beginning our next novel. Best of luck on Thursdays test!!

ENG1P: This class is just about to finish the novel Crabbe. Part way through the novel the class predicted what they thought would happen (opinion paragraph) and they wrote a newspaper article about the main character's disappearance. Once they finish the novel, they will play reporter again and write a follow-up article now that the main character has returned from his disappearance - in addition the class will comment on how close or far off their predictions were.
Next week, we will continue to do some work from the textbook and have a look at poetry by looking at some of their favourite songs/lyrics. The literacy test will not affect this class Thursday as the test is only written in the morning and this class runs in the afternoon as per usual.

Welcome Back from March Break!!!

HSP3M: This class has developed a questionnaire that they will be composing, copying and administerring to their sample groups. The populations they are working with are either the entire student body or the town of Dunnville. They will gather their information this week, start to process all the information they recieve and begin the task of analysing their results. Next week the class will start to put together their findings into a report.

ENG2D: This class is continueing to view or present a seminar on Lord of the Flies, on a particular chapter. At the end of the novel the class will recap all the information that they learned, take part in an on-line game/review and prepare themselves for a novel/unit quiz. They continue to read independantly for their summative project of three novels of their own
choosing.

ENG1P: This class is working on completing their newspaper articles from the week before the break, as well as continuing with the novel Crabbe and the chapter questions and chart that accompany the novel. We continue to work in the text and from the novel.

Week of March 5th - 9th

HSP3M: This class is catching up on their Journal Portfolio entries before moving from the textbook to their notes. The class will review independent and dependent variables, population and sample population and statistics before creating their own questionnaires. The class will decide on a social issue they wish to explore, select a sample group, design a questionnaire, administer the questionnaire and perform statistical analysis on their results. The practice version will be done in class this week and the 'real deal', after March Break.

ENG2D: This class has observed three different ways to present a seminar on Lord of the Flies, but there are more. The class has been assigned partners and a chapter that they are responsible for presenting; character, setting, plot, quotations, literary devices, connections and reinforced learning. Class time will be given on Monday and Tuesday with seminars starting on Wednesday for chapters #4 and #5, Thursday is Summative reading, and Friday will be chapter #6. After the March Break the rest of the chapters will be presented.

ENG1P: This class has completed questions for the novel Crabbe and have submitted #1 - #8 for grading. We will continue to read, answer questions and fill in a chart on the novel as well as work out of our textbook on paragraphing and creating a newpaper article. After the March Break we will continue with Crabbe and tie the newspaper article to the novel.
